Are you on the hunt for a really unique and personal engagement gift (also amazing for anniversary or wedding gifts)? Well I have the perfect present for you! A super awesome personalised heart-shaped map of a location that is special to the happy couple. It does involve some DIY but I promise it’s easy as pie (if I can do it, anyone can). The extra love and effort that goes into a handmade gift just makes it so much more personal!

My best friend got engaged recently (woo hoo). I wanted to give her something really special so I searched and searched online for hours only to find nothing that I loved enough to give her and her hubby to be. I found some funky artwork using personalised maps which I liked the idea of, but I felt they were not personal enough. For the money they were charging I felt that I could make one just as good with more of a personal touch, all by my myself!

“How do I make this amazing DIY map heart engagement gift?” I hear you say! Well, I’m gonna show you how. You can use this method to transfer images or photos to wood with Mod Podge.

How to Make Your Very Own Personalised Wooden Heart Map Wedding or Engagement Gift:

What you need:

Make Your Own Amazing Personalised Wooden Heart Map - What You Need

1. Print Your Map

First of all you need to decide on the map. I used the area in Iceland where my friend got engaged. You could also use the place the couple met, where they live or anywhere important to them. If it is for a wedding present you can use the wedding venue or honeymoon location (P.S this is also an awesome idea for a wedding day gift for your other half).

Once you have decided on the map you need to print it out. I found my map on Google Maps, popped it into Photoshop and changed the colours a bit. I also used my magical Photoshop skills to add the names of the park my friend got engaged and their hotel as well as a tiny diamond in the spot he popped the question (you can skip the Photoshop bits). Print the image on a laser printer (IMPORTANT: it must be laser and not inkjet) and remember to reverse your image so all the text prints out backwards (most photocopiers/ printers will have this option).

Make sure your map is a little bigger than your heart. I printed mine in 20 x 20 cm as my wooden heart is 15 x 15 cm. Try to keep the most important location in the middle so it doesn’t get cut off.

2. Transfer Your Map to Your Heart

Cover the map with a thick layer of your Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium and smooth it out evenly.

Carefully place your heart face down on the map.

Turn the map over and smooth out the paper to make sure they are no air bubbles or bumps.

Leave for 24 hours to dry (overnight)

3. Remove the Paper

Take some lukewarm water and soak your heart with a sponge until you can see the map coming though.

Leave it for 2 minutes to soak in.

Take your sponge and gently rub the paper in circular motions to remove the paper and reveal your awesome wooden heart map.

You may need to let it dry and repeat this process until all the paper is gone.

Peel away any of the map that is left around the edges until you are left with a perfect heart.

4. Seal Your Heart

Once you are sure all the paper is gone, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge Matte over the top to seal your design.

Leave it to dry overnight (it may be dry before this but I left it overnight to be safe).

The heart pictured above is an example of what happens if you don’t reverse your map when printing. You get backwards text and have to start again like silly me! Oops!

Ta da! Your heart is finished, well done you! Now reward yourself with a glass of wine or a cold beer to celebrate.

5. Frame Your Awesome Wooden Map Heart Picture

I bought a gorgeous box frame from Hobby Craft and popped my heart right in the middle. The frame I used is 30 x 30 cm with a 20 x 20 cm mount so it fitted perfectly.

I cut a piece of thick white paper (also from Hobby Craft) and stuck my heart right in the middle using White Foam Pads. You can also use glue or little glue dots for this.

If you like to can leave it at that and you will have an awesome personalised engagement/ wedding/ anniversary gift. Or you can add in a little personalised plaque like I did. Here is how I did it.

How to Make a Personalised Wooden Plaque:

This is very similar to the way I made my wooden heart map, but it uses the Matte Mod Podge instead of the Mod Podge Photo Transfer MediumYou can use this method to transfer any text or graphics to wood with Mod Podge.

You will need:

1. Print your text

Decide what you fancy writing. I used the couple’s names and the place and date they got engaged. Print it out using a Laser printer and make sure you reverse the image like you did with the heart.

2. Transfer your text

Cover your paper with a thin layer of Modge Podge Matte (IMPORTANT: Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium is not transparent. If you use this you will be left with a big white rectangle and that’s just not pretty!)

Place your Mod Podged paper onto the wood.

Press down and smooth out any bumpy bits or air bubbles.

Leave for 24 hours to dry (overnight).

3. Remove the Paper

Take some lukewarm water and soak your tag with a sponge until you can see the text coming though.

Leave it for 2 minutes to soak in.

Take your sponge and gently rub the paper in circular motions to remove the paper and reveal your shiny new text.

You may need to let it dry and repeat this process until all the paper is gone.

4. Seal Your Plaque

Once you are sure all the paper is gone, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge Matte over the top to seal your design.

Leave it to dry overnight (it may be dry before this but I left it overnight to be safe).

There you go! You have made another amazing creation (maybe have another glass of wine or beer to celebrate).

To finish off your design, stick your plaque onto your mount on anywhere you like in your frame.

Wrap your awesome engagement gift and you are all done.

Once you have mastered the technique you can use it to transfer any text, graphics or photos to wood with your magical Mod Podge so why not get creative and try some other designs. I know I will be transferring photos to every wooden surface I can find haha.

Have you tried this design? I would love to hear how you got on and see your fabulous finished engagement presents.
